SGFX Batam Getaway

This getaway trip was suppose to be conducted few days before 2008 ends but it was later postponed due to a certain ‘last minute’ disturbance.

It’s like you are excited for an upcoming 3 days 2 night holiday after 362 years of slavery, everyone was in a holiday mood, when at the last minute, your boss came up and said “can you come tomorrow to make sure everything goes well in the event?“…

Definitely made you feel like F@!#, doesn’t it? You just want to tell him/her off but you can’t because by doing so, you might risk yourself getting fired.

If it was me, I shut him/her off and I don’t really care what happened next. Once I’ve said face to face towards my former boss, “shut tha F@!# up you friggin’ bitch!”. I really have to tell him off ’cause he was really annoying, like a cross-breed of a common shit fly and a SARS infected mosquito.

So yeah… that’s the different between me and the rest.

And so… it was postponed… and re-planned… and reconfirmed… and on 24th January 2009… we proudly announced to SGFreakyLinks first official Batam getaway trip.

The elites crew member who were in this getaway trip are Lexis, HarryEx, PonyGirl and yours truly, DeathScythe.

As that morning begin…

…, everyone was suppose to be at Seah Im Hawker Centre/Harbour Front by 9.00 am. Any later and we would definitely missed the 11.00 am ferry to Batam.

I’ve a little doubt about we not sticking to the original plans, which we suppose to meet-up at 8.00 am instead. It’s the eve of Chinese Lunar New Year… and I’m very sure we going to have some problems later on while buying the tickets.

Slowly walking into Harbour Front Center ticketing booth, we had to make a quick pit-stop to the ATM machine. PonyGirl wanted to cash out some additional cash for her ’spare’ back-up.

This is when HarryEx slowly gets into the mood and began practicing his Indonesian accents (video above).

At the ticketing booth…

…the queue was pathetically long.

Originally, our planning was to get on a ferry called “Penguin” and ride to Batam Center. But there had been a slight change, because the next available ferry was at 2.30 pm. And now it’s 9.45 am. We have to act fast, so I told PonyGirl to stay in the queue while HarryEx and Lexis look over at the other ticketing booth.

A ferry called Wavemaster… and it’s wrote “Sekupang”.

PonyGirl informed us that Sekupang terminal is somewhere near Turi Beach Resort. It’s a remote place which has no facilities and a million miles away from the city area.

Another ferry destination that Wavemaster provides was a ferry to Harbour Bay.

We don’t know where it is, but this ferry hold an empty slot at 11.45 am. The earliest slot compare to Sekupang and Batam Centre.

I told them PonyGirl to ditch the ferry queue to Batam Centre and proceed with Harbour Bay.

Looking a bit worried, she asked “You sure?”…

I told her, “It’s either we take Wavemaster and have a place to stay in Batam, or get on Penguin and sleep in the streets.”

I’ve faced such issue before when I was at Batam with my Japanese friend, Yu. It’s because we take things for granted, we almost sleep in the streets. Luckily I’ve a few contacts there and well, instead of checking into Hotel 89, we checked into Hotel 88. Till now… I still wonder how both of us got lost, trying to find the shopping mall which is located EXACTLY behind the hotel.

Later on, we find out that Harbour Bay is just 5 minutes away from the city area.

So it’s decided.
All of us Freakmasters are getting on the Wavemasters!

Comparing Penguin and Wavemaster…

Here’s the comparison of both Penguin and WaveMaster services.

PENGUIN:

• Ticket cost about $45+ which does not includes $8 sea tax charge.
• Sea tax charge are payed on return trip back to Singapore.
• Ferry has double deck and can smoke cigarette.
• Approximately about 1 hour of travel time.
• Stops at Batam Center which has a a huge Hypermart and a Shopping Mall.
• Travel time from Terminal to Hotel is around 20 minutes.
• Next ferry available is at 2.30 pm and current time is 9.45 am.

WAVEMASTER:

• Ticket cost about $52+ which includes the $8 sea tax charge.
• Ferry has one deck, no yellow box for smokers… but they got a tables for us to play Scrabbles!!
• Approximately about 1 hour of travel time.
• Stops at Harbour Bay which only has a few food stall.
• It’s 5 minutes away from the city which makes it 10 minutes (or less) travel time to the hotel.
• Next ferry available was at 11.45 am and current time is 9.45 am.

…and that’s about it.

Don’t forget, we’re Singaporeans too.
Somewhere underneath these thick skin of ours, there are still kiasu-ism.

I’m only Kiasu at getting on, getting out of the boat first… as well as getting into the custom queue first.
I hate queueing up.

The queue was like *tooooooot*…

…and it was bloody freaking tedious! I am frustrated.

PonyGirl keep rubbing my chest and said “relaaaaax”… “calm down…”

There was this once when an Chinese attempted to jump queue in front of me. I’ve managed to give him a rough body push which directly means “try to jump queue again and you will have an appointment with my foot!”.

Soon, all of us got inside the checkpoint and well… the boat is late.

Mother f@!#ing son of a f@!# jackfruit f@!# what the f@!#ing hell!

Do you know that if we checked in late, our tickets will be burned. No refund. No money back.
But if the ferry arrived late, our precious time got burned instead… and we can’t do anything about it. Can’t complain and can’t ask for refund. Either way, we’re in a lost situation.

Journey to the Batam…

I’ll not be writing anything for this section cause the story was being told in the above video.

At Harbour Bay…

After going through the check point, everyone went to the nearest money changer to convert SGD to IDR.

If you did not pay attention to the XE rates, few days ago, $1.00 SGD is equal to $7,500 IDR.

But today, we only get $7,350 IDR for a dollar. The rate was really bad for us. I guess we won’t be as DAMN rich as we were before. Haahaa…

Question…
What do smokers buy first when they landed in Batam?

Cigarettes of course.

And do you know why?
Well… in Singapore, the price of cigarettes is equivalent to “volunteering to sit on an electric death chair, with a big smile, switch on and kill yourself”.

In Batam, the highest price I’ve ever seen is equivalent to $1.50 SGD and a quicker lung cancer if you are a heavy smoker.

Either way, it’s still a good bargain.

Speaking of cigarettes, before I proceed further into our adventure at Batam, allow me to introduce you… Avolution.

What we can see on the road…

…was quite interesting when we’re in the cab.

PonyGirl, the bargain queen, manage to get us a taxi ride to our hotel for $20,000 IDR… which calculates to about $3.00 SGD! Friggin’ insane price right?!

Anyway, I’ve managed to capture this on camera while we slowly leaving harbour Bay terminal.

Interesting right?

Most probably the architect designer gets his inspiration from the S11 event.

There’s a 911 marking on the building. I assumed this facility is sort of an emergency clinic, or hospital, or somewhere you can see a doctor, or see a slutty nurse perhaps.

There are couples of urban structures while we’re on the road. Some has a tag abandon attached to it and some are under a 500 years construction plans. I just wonder why business people would want to spread their love and joy on making some income at Batam, and ends up abandoning it.

This… is not a rare sight when you are on the road.

“Tanah ini dijual” means This land is sold.

You can see this sign almost everywhere… and if you came back to the same spot after 20 year, you still see the same sign but a thicker vegetation. In my point of view, some tycoon must have bought the land, using Batam as a Monopoly game where he/she can buy land, build houses or hotels, and get free parking.

If you think Palm Spring only exists in California. They have Palm Spring here too in Batam!
I did not manage to see any palm trees there… but I think I saw a shop selling spring chicken next to it.

At the traffic stop, you can get to witness Indonesia kids, probably as young as 9 year old, selling newspaper, asking for donation and stuff just to earn a living.

…finally, this.

An awful sight which you can see almost everywhere. Black smelly, murky, with rubbish and parasite infected drains.
Trust me, the smell is really, really bad.

So if you do not want to see such thing in Singapore, I’ll suggest you stop taking your trash for granted and throw it at the rubbish bin instead.

Salam Sejahtera is Indonesian for Welcome…

I was told that Hotel 89 owns by a Singapore business man, not sure if that’s true. But I’m sure some would think that Hotel 89 is a one night budget hotel  similar to Hotel 81 in Singapore. Seriously, it not even an inch close.

I’ve never been to Hotel 81 before but I’m sure they don’t have free morning breakfast, SPA/Massage facilities, Pub with live band, Internet section and…

…a huge comfy sofa to sleep.

At the lobby counter, although PonyGirl had made a reservation few days back, our rooms were held back for a while due to the pathetic queue in Singapore. I was informed that the rooms should be ready within 30-45 minutes, and it’s 1.30 pm in Batam.

All ouf us have not taken our lunch yet so we head out to a nearby food stall to eat.

So what do we eat? Nasi Ayam Penyet.
I just hope what we just swollowed is not some chicken found at the roadside.

After the light lunch, all of us head back to the hotel and checked in for a short break.

While chilling, we continued our incomplete session of Scrabble which we’ve played earlier at Harbour Front.

You know something, the worst thing about playing Scrabble is when there’s no dictionary around. I know lots of English words which was not commonly used, such as dis, klieg, logia, quai and zoan, but because I can’t remember what it means, everyone though I’m just making it up words to gain points.

Sigh….

The above menu, pasted onto the bathroom mirror, the items are quite handy in case of emergency.
As I said earlier, Hotel 89 has almost everything.

They even got pad for leaking females… rubber for itchy males… axe oil for diarrhea guests.

I am not a first timer at Hotel 89. I’ve bunked here before a couple of time for a short holiday and a few friends in the process. Take it from me, the facilities are good. I personally loved their fluffy, comfy bed.

Yeah… HarryEx is enjoying it now as we speak.
Please pardon him ’cause he did not sleep for the past 24 hours.

Do you know that Hotel 89 is located in the middle of 2 shopping center?

You would not realised it if you look outside the window.

If you have a map with you, you’ll noticed that to the right, the road will lead to Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall, Batam current biggest shopping mall, and the left road will lead you to where we are marching now.

Onwards to BCS…!

BCS Mall is just a distance away from Hotel 89. Unlike some people, they would rather take the cab, but it’s not worth it.

The distance was like from Raffles City to Funan Centre… so you can imagine how near it is.

I’m not really sure what BCS means…. Batam Center Shopping? Just a wild guest…

Talking the cab earlier to the hotel, we manage to set our eyes on some of the exotic scene Batam had to offer. But by moving on spot to another on foot, you’ll eventually gets a closer look exotics.

Bersih Itu Indah is Clean is Beautiful in English. That’s about it.
There’s nothing ‘exotic’ about it. Seriously… nothing exotic… nothing interesting…

I’ve just put it up to fill up the space. Haahaahaa!

Anyway, one of the many sights you would see while walking are…

…the weird Bakso stores.

Just like in Japan, they have all type of stores, especially Ramen stores, and it’s almost everywhere.

In Indonesia, one of these “all type of stores” are the Bakso stores.

Bakso are called Meatballs in Indonesia. They look like testicles if it is not yet cooked.

Bakso are usually served in a bowl with soup, noodles, bean curd, eggs, ect. The taste of Bakso has a consistent homogeneous texture and spices to it.

First on the agenda is a Bakso shop near Hotel 89.

As written, it says “Bakso Malang - Enak, Segar, Alami“.

“Malang” is one of the city in Jakarta.

Indirectly, it also means Tragedy in Malay.

“Enak” is translated to Delicious, while “Segar” is Fresh and “Alami” is Experienced.

So in a full fledged English conversion, it mean “Tragic Meatballs - It’s delicious… Fresh… Experience it!”

This was taken at Batam Center Mega Mall.

It’s says “Bakso Lapangan Tembak Senayan Jakarta“…. and folks… “Lapangan Tembak” is Firing Range.

Another sight which you should be aware is…

…the Cruise Ship on land.

This photo was not taken during our short walk to BCS mall. It was taken on the third day while we are waiting for our ferry home.

The cruise ship building shown above is actually called Pacific Palace Hotel.

By day, you would see this hotel as a classy place, a five star type.
But by nights, hooligan, gangs and drunkard filled up most of the space and the parking lot.

Reason is because Pacific is the only place in Batam that has a disco.

I’ve been inside this so-called disco before… and it will be the last time too.

Probably one of the worst disco I’ve ever entered.

Here are my reason:

• Has cover charge
• Cover charge does not come with a free drinks
• A jug of beer are expensive.
• Only plays one track continuously, an Indonesian-techno-music, from business open till closing.

Wondering how the place survived? Well… if you were an observant person as I am, you’ll notice that this place has a backdoor-underground-under-table-underwear secrets. You don’t need to be an rocket scientist to know what’s going on after you’ve realised 80% of them shakes their heads left and right, over and over again.

If you slow in figuring it out… one word… Ecstasy.

…and a mini cruise ship.

This restaurant/cafe is located beside Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall.

I’m not sure what they served in this restaurant.

Next on our sight to see list, was a certain exercise banned in China, and it’s called…

…Falun Gong/Falun Dafa.

The written source from Wikipedia told us that Falun Gong was introduced to the republican of China in 1992 by Li Hongzhi. Its teachings cover spiritual, religious, mystical, and metaphysical topics. Falun Gong is an introductory book that discusses qigong, which introduces the principles and provides illustrations and explanations of the exercises involved in Falun Gong practice.

The BCS Mall…

Okay guys… If you have been to City Plaza in Singapore, BCS shows no difference. What they have in City Plaza, they have it too in BCS. Well… almost everything. Except for the fireworks, and the 64-bit Sega system which is selling for like $30.00 SGD!

We did not stayed long at BCS cause the place is quite boring. There are not much on sale nor anything interesting to see.

Soon, all of us get out of the place, hail a cab and on our way to one of the biggest shopping mall in Batam.

The Batam Centre Mega Mall…

This shopping mall can be easily be seen if you took a ferry down from Singapore and shored at Batam Centre.

The shuttle bus, hop in and experience what?

If you are currently a guest to Hotel 89 like us, you could actually take a shuttle bus from the hotel to the Mega Mall. Our intention was to take a shuttle bus from the hotel earlier but due to a “certain someone who still wants to look around and so confidence the bus will wait for us”… we eventually missed the shuttle bus.

Here’s the list of all the other hotels that the shuttle bus will go to.

Sitting here… writing this journal… looking at the numbers of hotel which the shuttle bus will be heading to pick up hotel guests… here’s a special thanks to that “certain someone” for making all of us missed the bus. If we were to get on it, I have a strong feeling that we would arrived after an hour when it took only 15 minute by taxi.

Pintu timur, or east door….

…or issit North? Maybe timur means south… or is it west… yeah so… my Malay are bad too… correct or not Mr “jackfruit”? Two words, screw you. For people like me, we don’t need to know what Timur means. The first word is pintu which mean door. And door is something you go through to get in or get out.

Earlier when we arrived at Harbour Bay, Lexis and HarryEx did not change all their SGD to IDR. They know that XE rate is $7,350 IDR for $1.00 SGD, and they want to take look at all the other money changer around, hoping to get a better rates.

Too bad, everywhere is still $7,350 IDR.

One thing uniqued about Batam…

…is they actually sell motorcycles inside the shopping mall.

Electra’s Pussy…

…or in Malay, Pepek Electra was the first two words that comes into my head when I read the above sign.

Originally, it was suppose to say Pempek Kolectra ( Pempek Collection ).

Pempek or Empek-Empek is a delicacy from Palembang which is made of fish and sago. Pempek is eaten together with a dark sauce called cuka ( vinegar in English ) or cuko ( in Palembang language ). Cuko is produced from adding brown sugar, chili pepper, garlic, vinegar, and salt into hot boiling water.

By now… everyone was hungry.

At first, all of us wanted to eat something classy cause everything is like so frigging cheap here. But after much debates, all of us decided on one place…

…Pizza Hut.

Yes… there’s no joke about it.

We traveled from Singapore to Batam to eat at Pizza Hut… which many would say it’s lame. Well… I’ve a surprise for you.

What we ordered:

• Supreme cheese crusted pizza with additional toppings
• Lasagna
• Chicken Drumsticks
• Fried Rice
• 4 corn soups
• A jug of coke

All of the above and we only paid  $38 SGD. If you buy them in Singapore, you will roughly get them for like over $70 SGD… and that does not include GST and service charge.

Day one… we were at Pizza Hut.

…and day two dinner at Godiva.

Yes… they have one of the classiest restaurant here in Nagoya Hill Shopping Mall.

…the decoration and concept was superb.

They even have bottles of chilli branded with their logo on it!

But If you asked me… the method of how they took/served our orders, I will give a 2 thumbs down and 2 middle fingers up.

Can you believe that we actually have to repeat our drink orders for like 5 times before the damn waitress gets it right?

…and when PonyGirl and my steak come, our fries was missing! PonyGirl asked and the waiter said that it’s still cooking. I mean… WHAT THE F@!#!!!

2 minutes later, the fries came and looking at the before and after photo above, I can actually make a Godiva version of Chipmore Cookie - Now you don’t see it… Now you do!

Ok guys… I’m sure most of you know the recent problems we had with a hacker trying inject SQL into our system, and that particular person who I’ve email.

Till now… I’ve yet to get any respond from him.

Do you want to know why?

I was told that their recent “sell salt at the cemetery” event got busted when the police came and raided their van for drugs. So I guess since it was an embarrassment and a failure since they can’t sell salt to ghost, he’s been making sugar business instead and sell to us human.

Anyway… this is the first and last time I came to Godiva.

Lets’s go back to day one at Batam Center Mega Mall …

From a far you can see XXI… …. … XXI! not XXX!

Nope, this is not an American Superbowl.

It’s actually an entertainment brand Golden Village and Cathay.

PonyGirl and I always wanted to head to Johor, Malaysia and try out their cinema facilities there but due to our busy schedule, we never manage to go there. And now since all of us are in Batam, this is the best time to experience Batam’s own cinema facility.

All of us watched an Indonesian horror filmed called Hantu Jamu Gendong. This film is based on an urban legend, once happened in Indonesia… but apparently, none of my guys on the Indonesian streets heard about it. Weird.

So what is Jamu Gendong?

The word gendong lilterally means ‘carry on the back’ while jamu means herb/herbal.
If anyone out there asked me what Hantu means, I am going to give you one tight slap.

Jamu is a traditional/herb/herbal medicine created by the Indonesian.

These herbal medicines are made from natural materials such as roots, leaves and stem bark, fruit, ect. Some ingredients are from animal parts too, such as Empedu Kambing atau Tangkur Buaya.

Believe it or not, Empedu means Bladder and Tangkur is erm… “mr winky”

Jamu are usually bitter in taste… that is until they did some modification and add honey into it as a sweetener.

Groceries shopping at Hypermart…

PonyGirl and myself have a few list that we need to buy and bring back home. I need to buy some crackers and PonyGirl wanted to buy some flour for her mom.

Speaking of flour… what do you think of the BlackForest flour? It’s brand… is Malay for Gay.

…and yeah, the whole shelves full of Gay products.

Walking all over the place, it was when we came across a Jamu section. PonyGirl said she wanted to give it a try cause it looks so tempting. The three of us we busy looking around when she passed us a certain Jamu box.

The three of us almost passed out while laughing.

Nope… we’re not racist. For us, Keling is quite a funny word.

Soon as everything is settled, we went back to the hotel and prepare ourselves…

…a traditional body massage.

All of us except for HarryEx. He said he wanted to shit. I didn’t bring my camera down during the massage. If I’m not mistaken, they don’t allow any photography.

This is Lexis back.

Scary huh? Actually, there’s many type of traditional method which the massager can apply to release the air out of our body. While PonyGirl and I get the normal treatment, Lexis get the special treatment… and the massager used a coin instead of her fingers.

Searching for a friend house…

I can just go on and on and on writing this journal but I’ve told a few friends that the journal will be release on Saturday 31st Jan 2009, which is today. So I’ve to cut it short.

To all who expected something abandon places or ruins in this journal, sorry to disappoint you but none of us went for urban exploring at Batam.

The only abandon building we ( HarryEx and myself ) taken at night are the ones above.

How we came about to these building? Actually… by luck. Both HarryEx and I gotten ourselves lost while looking for my friend house. His name is Nahna.

Eventually, we managed to meet up with Nahna younger brother and he pointed out his home. By the way… it’s 11.30 pm in the night.

Conclusion with a Fireworks Galore…

Compare to what we have seen in Singapore, it’s as close to the word “dick”. In Batam, what I was informed was, during the New Year and the Chinese Lunar New Year, the fireworks will keep on going and going from 8.00 pm till 5.00 am the next morning.
